What is Guardian Media Group?
Guardian Media Group (GMG) is one of the UK’s leading media organisations. We exist to support quality, independent, liberal journalism. Our core business is Guardian News & Media, which publishes the Guardian and the Observer newspapers and the theguardian.com website. We also have a diverse portfolio of investments to help support our journalism. We are wholly owned by the Scott Trust, which was established in 1936 to secure the ongoing independence of the Guardian.
What is the Scott Trust?
The Scott Trust is a private company and the sole shareholder in GMG. It was founded in 1936 as a trust and exists to secure the financial and editorial independence of the Guardian in perpetuity. The shareholders of the Trust take no dividend from the business. All of GMG’s profits are reinvested to support the Trust’s core purpose.
Who runs Guardian Media Group?
GMG has a board of directors which reports to the board of the Scott Trust.
Who sits on the Scott Trust?
Biographical details of all Scott Trust board directors can be found here.
What are the values of the Trust and company?
The Trust has a strongly held set of values which guide the business conduct of Guardian Media Group.
What is the relationship between Guardian Media Group and the Guardian?
GMG is the parent company of the Guardian. However, editorially the Guardian is completely independent from the commercial entity that owns it. The editor-in-chief is appointed by and reports directly to the Scott Trust, not the board of GMG.
What businesses does Guardian Media Group own?
The core business of GMG is Guardian News & Media. The group also owns a number of investments.
How is Guardian Media Group performing financially?
GMG’s annual reports can be found here.
What is Guardian Media Group’s tax position?
GMG is fully subject to the payment of corporation tax – and all other tax obligations – at the prevailing rate in the UK, the country in which we are domiciled. Where relevant, our approach of using losses to offset taxes on profitable companies is entirely within both the letter and spirit of UK law, approved by Parliament. As regards the disposal of our shareholding in Trader Media Group, an exemption – the Substantial Shareholding Exemption (SSE) – applies automatically, under UK tax law, to the sale of shares in trading companies. The application of SSE is mandatory; GMG has no discretion in the matter.
Is the Scott Trust a charity?
No, the Trust is not a charity. From 1936 to 2008 it was a trust, and since 2008 it has been a limited company. The Trust fulfils its community responsibilities through a registered charity, the Scott Trust Foundation, whose trustees are also directors of the Scott Trust.
